What APIContext adds to Datadog

Datadog agents report from inside your processes and hosts. That is their strength, and it is also where their horizon ends: an agent cannot measure the DNS resolution a customer's client performed, the TLS handshake negotiated at the edge, the CDN hop between customer and origin, or the latency a partner in São Paulo sees against an endpoint served from Frankfurt. APIContext takes those measurements — 30+ data points on every API call, broken out per hop, from 125+ public locations plus private nodes inside your own network — and sends them into Datadog as native OTEL. Three blind spots close at once:

  • Network telemetry Datadog agents do not generate. Per-hop DNS, TLS, connection, and transfer timings, attributed to the hop that caused the slowdown — so "the API is slow" becomes "TLS negotiation at the Sydney edge added 380 ms."
  • API conformance evidence. Live validation of responses against OpenAPI specs, FAPI 2.0 security requirements, and custom business rules, so schema drift arrives in Datadog as an event rather than as a customer ticket.
  • Coverage where no user has been yet. Synthetic checks fire every interval from every region, including endpoints no real user touched today and third-party APIs you depend on but cannot instrument.

What Datadog does that APIContext doesn't

Log management and correlation, infrastructure and host monitoring, real user monitoring, code-level transaction traces, database diagnostics, and full incident management are Datadog's domain — and APIContext deliberately does none of them. The division is easiest to see during an incident: APIContext reports that a payments endpoint's response schema drifted at 14:07 UTC from three regions. Datadog tells you the deploy that shipped at 14:05 is why. Neither signal is worth much on its own.

How the integration works

APIContext monitors your APIs for conformance with OpenAPI specifications and open standards including OAuth, OpenID Connect, FAPI, and FDX. When a nonconformance is detected — a schema mismatch, an authentication failure, an unexpected response — APIContext sends a real-time alert into Datadog as an event. Install the APIContext integration from the Datadog Integrations page and click Connect Accounts to authorize; then in APIContext, open Alerts & Webhooks, create an alert, and select "Datadog (Conformance Events)" as its destination. Failures are sent by default, and a toggle adds passing checks when you want the full record. Two example dashboards are published with the integration:

  • A Governance dashboard — a portfolio-level Conformance Summary across all monitored endpoints, for teams that report on API contract quality across a product suite.
  • An SRE dashboard — API Conformance Events surfaced in Datadog's incident workflow, so on-call engineers see contract violations alongside infrastructure alerts, logs, and traces from the same incident.

How teams run both

Datadog stays the correlation and incident layer; APIContext becomes the outside-in data source feeding it. Teams running both use APIContext as the source of truth for external API quality — conformance, CASC scores, FAPI compliance, geographic availability — and Datadog to correlate that signal with a deployment, an error-log spike, or a CDN configuration change happening at the same moment. Datadog answers "why is something slow inside my stack?" APIContext answers "what does my API actually look like to the customer, the partner, and the regulator?"
