The world runs on APIs. That’s why Contxt and APImetrics are merging.

By: Mayur, Jamie and Niall

We are excited to announce today that Contxt and APImetrics are merging, to create a new benchmark for API products.

Here’s why: the current product stack for APIs is simply under-powered and too fragmented to support today’s business expectations of APIs.

A staggering 83% of internet traffic is over APIs, according to Akamai. This surge in API-driven internet traffic is driven by the digital transformation wave, the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), and the growing prevalence of remote and hybrid work.

At this point, every company relies on APIs whether they want to or not. Great companies see the opportunity to use these technical resources as strategic tools for growth.

However, as APIs become more important, they also become more difficult to manage. Internal ownership and control gets more complicated and fragmented.

APIs need to be trusted and reliable. And so, a new role has emerged: API Product Owners have the crucial responsibility to ensure technical performance and deliver business results.

The job of an API Product Owner is to make sure that every stakeholder gets what they need. Just a few years ago, the bar for success was to build APIs that expose functionality to developers, to lower the cost of interoperability and improve flexibility for the business to create great user experiences. That’s still important, of course, but the mandate is now much broader.

Today, APIs must deliver superior user experiences and also be secure, privacy-preserving, performant, well-governed, and compliant.

Our merger brings together all of the capabilities necessary to enable modern APIs. Together, we’ll provide organizations with end-to-end visibility, proactive security measures, and comprehensive monitoring capabilities for their APIs. Our platform will empower businesses to optimize API performance, mitigate security risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver exceptional user experiences; and it will do it all with lightweight deployments that integrate easily with any infrastructure or component stack.

The merger supports prominent trends in the API-driven world, like:

  • Open Banking, which has revolutionized the financial sector in the UK and is making waves in the US and globally

  • Internet of Things, which need low-latency performance and robust authorization for data sharing

  • AI and Large Language Models, which offer potential for improved productivity, if only they can be made secure

We have gotten to know the founders of APImetrics, David and Nick, over several years working together on a range of initiatives, and we share some mutual board advisors. It has been exciting to see another team that sees the future of APIs as clearly as we do, and with a similar commitment to customers. The culture fit has been clear and obvious for everyone.

The future of APIs is, quite simply, the future of the internet. We are excited to drive innovation and support that future. And we are thrilled to share the next chapter of our journey with you. Thank you for joining us on this exciting ride.
