Security and privacy: better together

The best candy in the world is undoubtedly the peanut butter cup. The combination of peanut butter and chocolate is unsurpassed because each component supports the other. The saltiness of the peanut butter provides a contrast to the sweet chocolate, giving the flavors complexity. And the roasted peanuts echo the roasted cocoa beans, which provides an excellent complement.

And so it is too with security and privacy. The two priorities compliment each other perfectly; and also contrast each other enough to make the combination better than either would be on their own.

Security is focused on threat detection, prevention, and neutralization. Privacy is focused on building trusted relationships with users. The two goals use many of the same tools – monitoring, alerts, detection, and hardening…this complementarity means that many tools can be used to serve both goals.

And, at the same time, the contrast between the two goals makes them stronger. Privacy goals focus on giving users and systems choice and control over their experience. Security provides necessary constraints to that choice by defining some task paths that are out of bounds.

As privacy awareness grows among customers, security postures must advance to make better privacy possible.

And as security improves, customers will demand greater privacy and control.
